What is a personal recognizance bond?

A personal recognizance bond is a type of bail that allows a defendant to be released from custody without having to pay any money. Instead, the defendant is released based on their promise to appear in court for all scheduled hearings and to comply with any other conditions set by the court. These conditions may include things like drug testing, electronic monitoring, or regular check-ins with a probation officer.

Personal recognizance bonds are typically reserved for defendants who are considered low flight risks and who do not pose a danger to the community. They are often used for minor offenses, first-time offenders, or those with strong community ties.

If a defendant fails to appear in court or violates any of the conditions of their release, they may be re-arrested and their personal recognizance bond may be revoked. Defendants who violate their bond conditions may also be subject to additional charges or penalties.
